One of the Mid-Atlantic's most consistent beachbreaks, Ocean City lines up along roughly nine miles of open coast in Maryland, catching swell that misses most of Delaware and Virginia. A wide swell window, from NE around through S, means when nearby spots are flat, OC is often ridable. Jetty-assisted bathymetry at spots like 8th Street squeezes out hollow, dumping lefts and rights that can spit on overhead NE swell. Best conditions are low-to-mid tide with a west wind offshore, and peak size runs head-high to overhead-plus before it gets too shallow and punchy to navigate cleanly. Summer weekends are heavily crowded across all the named streets, with 48th being the first check and the heaviest local presence. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer hurricanes and fall nor'easters are the money windows. Consistency: high relative to the region. Beach replenishment has altered sandbars over the years, so conditions vary more than they used to, and Assateague Island remains the locals' preferred fallback when OC's banks aren't cooperating.
Summer is relentless: pay-to-park lots fill early, and the surfing beaches compress the lineup. Dawn patrol is the standard play from June through August. Winter thins everything out and locals tend to be welcoming, but when a proper nor'easter delivers overhead-plus surf, the established crew surfs assertively. The usual etiquette applies, don't drop in, read the pecking order, wait your turn.
Parking is paid and competitive in season, free and open October through April. Full boardwalk infrastructure, food, restrooms, surf shops, rentals, sits within walking distance year-round. Water quality is generally clean. No significant reef or rock hazard, rip currents on bigger swells are the main safety factor.
Assateague Island, directly south, offers longer stretches of uncrowded beach with better-shaped banks on overhead-plus swell and no parking pressure outside peak summer. Delaware spots to the north are more swell-starved, so OC is often the call when that direction is already flat.
