A freshwater sandbar peak on Lake Michigan's Illinois shoreline, Tower Road delivers surprisingly rideable waves when the lake decides to cooperate. It needs a sustained NE to NW fetch to generate enough energy, typically kicking in around 3-5ft and holding through mid to larger lake swells. Low to mid tide is the sweet spot, and W to SW offshore winds clean things up when the swell is running. The crowd is minimal on weekdays and manageable even on weekends given the open beach layout. Bottom: sand. Season: late fall through winter. Consistency: low to moderate, lake-swell dependent. Move well away from swimmers and casual beachgoers to find cleaner water and more room to work a set without interruption. This is a local convenience wave: if you live within 30 minutes, it earns its keep on a solid lake storm, if you're traveling from out of state specifically for this wave, reset expectations accordingly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions are typically quiet with only a handful of surfers out. Weekends bring more people, but the atmosphere stays casual and non-territorial. No heavy localism reported. New surfers are not going to run into attitude here. Simply spread out from the swimmers and the general beach foot traffic.

Access & Facilities

Tower Road Beach is a public access point on the North Shore of Illinois along Lake Michigan. Parking is available at the beach. Bring your own water and snacks as amenities can be limited depending on season. Winter sessions mean cold water and wind chill, dress for it.

Nearby Alternatives

When Tower Road is flat, other North Shore Illinois and southern Wisconsin access points along Lake Michigan work on the same swell windows. Check Evanston and Waukegan beaches for similar sandbar setups responding to the same NE to NW fetch.
