Riomar's outer reef is one of the few genuine offshore reef breaks on Florida's Atlantic coast, sitting more than 200 yards beyond the beach near Vero Beach. When a solid NE to ENE swell pushes through at low to mid tide, the rock reef lights up with rights and lefts that dwarf anything the inside shorepound can produce. SW to W winds groom the faces cleanly. Works from knee-high to well overhead, and the best sessions run chest to overhead. Suitable for all ability levels willing to earn the paddle, though newer surfers should know the channel is long and this is confirmed bull shark territory. Bottom: rock/reef. Season: fall through spring, with hurricane swells an occasional bonus. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. If the inside is looking flat and junky, don't write off the session until you've checked whether the outer reef is catching anything.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are nearly empty. Weekends see a few surfers but lineups stay relaxed. Locals are welcoming and the vibe is mellow. This is not a spot known for territorial behavior, but standard respect protocols apply: wait your turn, communicate in the lineup, and don't snake sets.

Access & Facilities

About 90 minutes from Panama City, north of San Carlos. Riomar Surf Camp offers free parking and is the most practical launch point. The hotel next door charges $10 to park. Expect a long paddle to the outer reef. Water quality is consistently clean. The primary hazard is bull sharks: this is confirmed territory, trust your instincts, and if anything feels off, stay out.

Nearby Alternatives

Vero Beach has several shorepound options closer to the beach that work in smaller, weaker swells when the outer reef isn't firing. Sebastian Inlet, roughly 20 miles north, is a strong regional alternative with a more defined channel and consistent right-hand performance when NE swells run.
