A rare-firing deepwater big-wave break on the Ventura County coast, Ventura Overhead sits at the seaward edge of Emma Wood State Beach where the coastline bends between town and the points beyond. It needs W or NW swell to push energy into its irregular bottom, E winds to groom the face, and enough size to wake it up, overhead to triple-overhead is the target window. When it's on, it produces wedgy open-face rights that funnel for hundreds of yards and lined-up lefts that barrel hard when there's west in the swell. This is advanced-only territory: a low-tide big-wave session here is exhausting, committing, and genuinely consequential. Bottom: reef, rock, and assorted junkyard debris. Season: November through February. Consistency: low, breaks a handful of times per season, so when the buoys light up, local big-wave surfers already know. Paddle out only if you're comfortable in serious surf, sharks are a known presence between sets.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are moderate given how rarely it breaks. Localism is reportedly relaxed, but big-wave lineups self-select, if you haven't surfed comparable California big surf, the lineup will sort that out without anyone saying a word. Respect the pecking order, don't drop in on charging sets.

Access & Facilities

Park at Emma Wood State Beach off US-101 north of Ventura. The walk and paddle are straightforward. Bring water and food, facilities at Emma Wood are minimal. After heavy rain, water quality degrades, check conditions before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Overhead is too big or not quite working, the reefs and points between Ventura and Rincon offer a range of options across multiple skill levels. Rincon itself, a short drive north, is the obvious go-to for powerful, properly-sized W and NW swell on the same window.
