Venice Breakwater punches above its weight for a Los Angeles beach break, producing hollow, powerful peaks off the jetty structure at the south end of Venice Beach. It needs a genuine W to WNW swell in the 3-8ft range to show its best shape, with light NE or E offshores and a medium incoming tide tightening up the walls. On those days, fast A-frame peaks fire off both sides of the breakwater, offering short but punchy rides that reward experienced surfers comfortable in competitive, sketch lineups. Bottom: sand with submerged rocks near the structure. Season: fall and winter, with occasional fun on SSW summer swells. Consistency: moderate to good in winter. Urban runoff degrades water quality noticeably after rain, and rip currents run strong along the breakwater wall, so know your exit before you paddle out. Shuffle your feet on the sand for stingrays on the walk in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends are brutal here. The Venice Breakwater lineup is one of the most crowded in LA when conditions align, and a vocal contingent of territorial regulars raises the friction level noticeably. Forecasts rate localism at 6 out of 10. Dawn patrol on weekdays is your best shot at open water. Be competent, wait your turn, and keep your cool.

Access & Facilities

Drive Venice Blvd toward Marina Del Rey. Street parking and paid lots are available but fill fast on good days. The beach is a short walk from the lots. Restrooms and outdoor showers are on-site. Avoid surfing here within 72 hours of significant rainfall due to storm drain runoff.

Nearby Alternatives

El Porto, a few miles north in Manhattan Beach, offers more consistent sand peaks with a slightly less intense vibe. Malibu's First Point is the go-to longboard alternative up the coast when south swells push through. Sunset Beach and Seal Beach are worth checking further south if the WNW swell is running.
