A sandbar break sitting at the foot of the pier where Washington Blvd dead-ends into the Pacific, Venice Beach Pier delivers two distinct wave options depending on which side of the structure you paddle out on. The north side produces a hollow, punchy left that can throw a quick tube section on a good NW swell, while the south side runs a longer, friendlier right that gives intermediate and beginner surfers room to work sections all the way toward the marina. Combo NW and SW swells fill in the banks most consistently through winter and into early spring. The wave is surfable at all tides, though a dropping mid tide tends to sharpen both peaks. Crowds are a reality here year-round given the proximity to LA's dense surf population. Bottom: sand. Season: November through March. Consistency: moderate to high in winter. Arrive at dawn to trade punchy peaks with a fraction of the usual mob.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most accessible beach breaks in LA County and crowds reflect that. Weekend afternoons stack up fast with surfers of every ability level. Localism is mild compared to reef breaks in the area, but the sheer volume of people in the water means jostling for sets is constant. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the most reliable way to find manageable numbers.

Access & Facilities

Washington Blvd runs directly to the pier. Street parking and a nearby lot are available but fill quickly on weekends. Restrooms, showers, and bike path access are all on site. Boardwalk food options are within a short walk. No significant hazards beyond the pier pilings themselves. Avoid surfing directly adjacent to the structure.

Nearby Alternatives

El Porto, a few miles north near Manhattan Beach, offers more consistent sandbar peaks and handles larger NW swells well. Malibu's First Point is viable when a solid SW groundswell fills in and the wind stays light. Both spots shift the experience significantly in quality and crowd character.
