Beachbreak peaks spread across four miles of undeveloped San Onofre coastline, just south of the nuclear plant off Basilone Road. Six trails drop from bluff-top parking to separate sandbars, each picking up S, SW, W, and NW swells, with combo SSW-plus-WNW conditions producing the punchiest, most defined peaks. Best at mid to low tide with E or NE offshores, the wave softens considerably at high tide and closes out in bigger, messier swells above around 8ft. Suited to beginners through intermediates who want an uncrowded session, though weekends draw more bodies and bluff parking can fill early. Bottom: sand and gravel. Season: year-round, with autumn and winter combo swells most reliable. Consistency: moderate to low. Pay the state park entry fee, factor in the bluff walk with your board, and bring stingray shuffle habits from the first step into the water.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are genuinely empty, one of the least-pressured stretches of Southern California coastline. Weekends change that fast, and the bluff parking lot fills early on any swell. The vibe is welcoming across all six trails, no localism to speak of. Dawn patrol on weekends solves both the crowd and parking problem simultaneously.

Access & Facilities

Exit Basilone Road from the 5 Freeway and head south past San Onofre Surfing Beach to the State Park entrance. Entry fee applies. Six marked trails descend the bluff, the walk ranges from short to moderately long depending on which trail you choose. Camping is available in the park. Water and basic facilities at the lot. Trestles is a short drive north for comparison on any given day.

Nearby Alternatives

When Trails is flat or shapeless, Trestles to the north is the obvious call and handles the same swell windows with far superior shape. San Clemente's beach and point options to the north also fire on S and W swells and offer more variety if the bluff walk doesn't pay off.
