A reliable but fickle SoCal beachbreak wedged between the busier lineups of Blacks to the south and Del Mar to the north, Torrey Pines offers a lower-pressure option along San Diego's North County coast. It runs on W and NW windswells and groundswells, with combo SW swells adding variety. E winds from NE to SE are ideal before the typical onshore flow arrives by 10-11am. Mid-to-high rising tide is the sweet spot, helping sandbars hold shape. Beginners can manage small days, but once surf climbs past head-high the paddle-out gets punishing and the sandbars close out, intermediate surfers are the core audience. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: moderate, sandbar-dependent and fickle in summer. Parking fills fast due to hikers using the Torrey Pines Preserve trail, so the State Park Explorer Pass is worth it.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is minimal and the vibe is welcoming. Weekday crowds are sparse, weekends draw moderate numbers, amplified by beach-goers and hikers. Non-surfer foot traffic inflates parking pressure more than lineup pressure. Find your own peak rather than dropping into whoever is already set up.

Access & Facilities

Park in the North or South state lots, the North Beach Lot gives easier access to the more consistent peaks. Street parking on Carmel Valley Road is limited. Restrooms and some amenities are on-site. Water quality is fair, typical of SoCal. Avoid surfing for 72 hours after significant rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Torrey Pines closes out or the sandbars are flat, Blacks Beach to the south offers more consistent structure and handles size better. Del Mar City Beach to the north catches similar swell and can produce cleaner peaks on lighter crowd days.
