A fickle but rewarding point with reef sections, Terra Mar sits in a residential pocket of North County San Diego between Carlsbad and Oceanside. W-SW and WNW groundswells are the sweet spot, with NW winter energy also worth chasing. Offshore E to NE winds clean it up. Knee-high to a few feet overhead is the prime size window. Tide is critical: too high and cliff refraction creates messy backwash, too low and the wave closes out fast. Mid-tide on a solid 3-5ft groundswell unlocks the point and the rock reefs north and south of the beach entrance. Works across skill levels when small, but gets progressively more powerful and technical as size builds. Bottom: sandy beach with flat scattered rocks. Season: winter NW swells and summer S swells, with W-SW windows year-round. Consistency: fickle. Stingrays shuffle when wading in, rocks demand care near the reefs, and avoid surfing within 72 hours of heavy rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays stay relatively quiet. Weekends draw more bodies, and when conditions align, local talent shows up in force. Expect shortboarders, longboarders, and SUPs competing for the same peaks. The vibe is generally mellow, but good surfers live nearby and they know this wave better than you do. Be patient, wait your turn, and don't snake.

Access & Facilities

Limited public parking in a residential area. Two entry options: north near the power plant or south via the stairwell at the signal. No major amenities on-site. Shuffle your feet through the sand to avoid stingray strikes. Avoid post-rain sessions given fair water quality ratings.

Nearby Alternatives

When Terra Mar is being fickle, Tamarack Ave Beach to the north offers more consistent beachbreak peaks and is a go-to for the same swell windows. Carlsbad State Beach provides additional options along the same stretch of coast.
