Left · MixedAdvanced6–12 ftJan – Dec

A hairy left-hand slab that only wakes up on big winter swells, Shitpipe breaks off an old sewer pipe caisson running roughly a mile offshore from LAX, visible from Vista del Mar. It needs WSW to WNW swell, 3ft overhead-plus, with E to SE offshore winds pushing in at low tide to show its best face. This is not a wave for developing surfers: the name filters out enough kooks, but aggressive locals handle the rest. Bottom: cement, barnacle, and sand. Season: November through February. Consistency: low, only firing when Southern California winter swell hits threshold size. The water quality lives up to the name entirely, so cover any cuts before paddling out and skip it if you've got open wounds or a weak stomach.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup is typically mellow on crowd numbers, partly because the spot demands size and partly because the name and setting do their own filtering. Locals are described as aggressive toward weak surfers. Surf well, stay aware of priority, and you'll be fine. Don't expect a warm welcome if you're under-skilled for the conditions.

Access & Facilities

Parking lot directly across from the Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant off Vista del Mar. LAX flight path overhead. No facilities worth mentioning. Water quality is poor by any measure. Rinse off thoroughly after surfing and treat any cuts immediately.

Nearby Alternatives

El Porto sits just north and handles similar swell windows with more forgiving conditions across all tides. Further south, Manhattan Beach Pier picks up the same W and NW groundswells and offers a more sanitary environment when Shitpipe is either flat or uninviting.
