A mellow beach break on the Northern California coast near Trinidad, Moonstone catches swell from multiple directions and delivers long rights and lefts when the sandbars line up. Best in SW to NW swell at 2-6ft with light offshore winds out of the east. Mid to high tide keeps the banks fuller and reduces the close-out tendency that plagues the spot on low tide or oversized days. Conditions suit beginners and longboarders most of the time, though the paddle-out gets genuinely challenging when bigger sets are closing out the beach. Weekdays are quiet with only a handful of surfers in the water, weekends draw more of a crowd, especially in summer. Bottom: sand. Season: fall and winter for swell consistency. Consistency: moderate, highly variable sandbars. When it clicks, the peaks reel through multiple sections all the way to the sand, but Moonstone is fickle enough that you should check it fresh rather than relying on nearby spots as a proxy.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions are typically low-pressure with a small, relaxed crew. Weekends and any decent swell window in summer will pack the lineup. Localism is mild, but experienced locals know how differently the sandbars break from each other and will position accordingly. Beginners should stick to the inside on bigger days.

Access & Facilities

Moonstone Beach is off Highway 1 near Trinidad, about 25km north of Arcata. Parking is straightforward. Stop by Salty's Bait and Tackle in Trinidad for local surf and fishing intel. Water temperatures run cold year-round on this stretch of the NorCal coast, so a 4/3 or thicker suit is standard most months, with booties recommended in winter.

Nearby Alternatives

If Moonstone is closing out, Trinidad Head and the surrounding area offer different swell exposures and wind protection worth checking. Camel Rock and other beach breaks along this stretch can fire on the same swell windows but behave differently depending on sandbar conditions.
