Moonlight Beach is one of North San Diego County's more dependable beachbreaks, pulling in both NW and SW swells to produce scattered a-frame peaks across shifting sandbars. Offshore winds arrive from the E and NE, with autumn bringing the best combo swells alongside classic Santa Ana conditions. Tide matters here: the push after low is the sweet spot, as a fully drained tide crumbles waves into closeouts and too much water softens everything into mush. Beginners will find it welcoming on small days, but shoulder-high to overhead surf introduces real rip current risk and heavier paddle-outs. Bottom: sand over shifting bars. Season: year-round, best Oct through Apr. Consistency: reliable. Shuffle your feet walking in to avoid stingrays, and give the water a miss for 72 hours after heavy rain when runoff degrades water quality.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect moderate crowds on warm-weather weekends and summer days with small surf. Cold winter mornings thin the lineup considerably. There's a capable local crew who show up when quality kicks in, so read the pecking order and rotate respectfully. Overall, the vibe is manageable rather than territorial.

Access & Facilities

Encinitas city center sits directly above the beach. A paid lot handles most traffic, free street parking exists nearby but fills early on good days. Restrooms, showers, and food options are walkable from the sand. The staircase access is straightforward with no significant hike.

Nearby Alternatives

When Moonlight is too small or blown out, Swami's point break to the south picks up swell more efficiently and holds shape in larger conditions. D Street and Grandview to the north offer similar beachbreak options worth checking on the same run.
