A left-hand point that wraps into a rocky cove at the northern tip of the Monterey Peninsula, Lover's Point is the first in a series of left points running toward Pacific Grove. It works best on W, NW, and N swells with E or SE winds keeping the face clean, and incoming to mid tide tends to shape the wave most consistently. The break suits a wide ability range on paper, but the lineup runs tight and local pressure is real, meaning visitors should read the room carefully before paddling out. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: September through May, with winter most consistent. Consistency: moderate, fickle outside the swell window. Bring a mid-length or fish for smaller days since the wave can be gutless under waist-high, but a shortboard handles the punchier overhead sets that arrive in winter. Water quality is generally clean, though Pacific Grove has a history of stormwater issues after heavy rain so check conditions before entering.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderate crowd during the week, busier on weekends. Local vibe is genuinely intimidating. Visitors have reported being directly asked where they live. The peak is focused and tight, so strangers stand out quickly. Pay your dues in the water, don't snake, and understand that this spot has a long-established local community who have earned priority. Dawn patrol on weekdays gives the best odds of a relaxed session.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available on-street and in nearby lots along Ocean View Blvd. The cove is also frequented by swimmers, divers, and kayakers, so expect mixed-use water traffic on calm days. Rocks and kelp are the primary in-water hazards. Booties are worth considering for the entry and exit depending on the tide.

Nearby Alternatives

The half-dozen left points running along the peninsula toward Pacific Grove offer similar swell exposure and are worth exploring when Lover's Point is too crowded or not cooperating. Asilomar State Beach is a short drive and picks up swell from a wider window on days when the points are too small.
