A punchy right-hand reef/point four miles north of Santa Cruz, Four Mile earns its reputation as one of the Central Coast's better winter setups when the swell cooperates. NW, W, and WSW swells wrap into the point and hit a semi-gnarly rock reef, producing fast, rippable walls with a hollow inside section over the shelf. NW to NE winds blow offshore here, making this a go-to when the rest of the coast turns onshore. Best size runs from waist-high to double overhead, and it handles all tides though incoming to high tends to clean up the shape. Intermediate to advanced surfers will feel at home, beginners should look elsewhere given the reef, strong locals, and competitive lineup. Bottom: rock reef. Season: November through February. Consistency: high in winter swells. Leave anything valuable in the car and accept that it may not be there when you get back.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism here is real and rated intimidating. Heavy car counts and surfers craning from the cliff are a reliable indicator the lineup is already stacked. Dawn patrol in winter is your best chance at less friction. Respect the pecking order, don't snake sets, and don't bring a crew of friends on a pumping day unless you know someone.

Access & Facilities

Park in the dirt lot on the ocean side of the highway and walk roughly half a mile down to the beach. There are no facilities. The lot has a well-known theft problem, so leave nothing visible in your vehicle. Bring water and anything else you need.

Nearby Alternatives

If Four Mile is too crowded or too small, Santa Cruz's main breaks a few miles south offer more options across all skill levels. Steamer Lane handles similar NW swell and is a better-organized lineup for intermediate surfers willing to wait their turn.
