A sand-shifting rivermouth A-frame on Taiwan's east coast, Donghe delivers punchy peaks that can ledge up fast and hold size when the swell cooperates. It fires best on NE to E swells from 3 to 8ft, with offshore winds blowing from the west, and mid to high tide keeping the sandbar honest. The lineup skews toward the foreign expat crew based in Taitung who claim this as their winter home break, plus a handful of visiting intermediates and advanced surfers. Weekdays see a near-empty lineup, weekends draw a few more faces but never gets genuinely crowded. Bottom: mixed sand and rivermouth sediment. Season: July through March, with typhoon groundswells peaking autumn. Heavy rain shifts the sandbar overnight, so scout from Donghe Bridge before paddling out. Bring a shortboard for punchy conditions, a step-up when size pushes past 6ft.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The core crew here is a tight-knit group of long-term foreign residents who treat this as their home break. Vibe is soul-surfer relaxed rather than aggressive, but respect the regulars who surf here every single day. Read the lineup before paddling into sets. Weekdays offer the emptiest conditions.

Access & Facilities

Head north on Highway 11 from Taitung to Donghe. The rivermouth is visible from Donghe Bridge, a natural scouting point to check conditions and read sandbar position before committing. A small lane past the bridge leads down to a village with parking. No formal facilities on site, stock up in Taitung. Watch for rips near the rivermouth channel, especially after rain when outflow is strong.

Nearby Alternatives

When Donghe is walled out or the bar has shifted badly, the broader Taitung coastline holds several reef and beach options that pick up similar NE swell. The Taitung area has enough setups to make the drive worthwhile even on inconsistent days.
