A right-hand reefbreak peeling off the main beach of Hengchun peninsula, Nanwan delivers sculpted faces and speed when S to SW swells align with low-to-mid tide. Optimal conditions call for SE to SW swell in the 2-8ft range, with W to NW offshore winds keeping faces clean. The reef accelerates waves noticeably when size builds past 4ft, producing barreling sections that thin out the learner crowds and watercraft that pack this bay on smaller days. Intermediate surfers will find the most value here, though the shallow coral reef demands respect and a solid duck-dive. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: typhoon season, late summer into autumn. Consistency: medium. Arrive at first light on a solid typhoon swell for the best combination of form, light crowd pressure, and manageable offshore conditions before sea breezes fill in.
This is the main beach for Hengchun, so expect crowds, especially on small, mellow days when beginners, SUPs, and general watercraft fill the bay. When size and reef consequence increase past 5ft, the lineup self-selects. Respect the locals who surf here year-round and yield to anyone threading a deeper section.
A carpark serves the beach directly, and lifeguards are on duty in peak season. Commercial activity in the bay means some water quality concerns, check conditions after heavy rain. Reef booties are worth considering given the shallow coral.
Houbihu Harbour offers shallow rights and lefts in the same bay when Nanwan is too big or blown out. Houbihu Point adds long, hollow rights further outside on the same typhoon swell. East along the Kenting resort coast, scattered beachbreaks run out to Banana Bay when a clean S swell is running.
