A mellow sand-bar beach break south of Long-Fong Harbor, Chunan is the most accessible surf on Taiwan's central west coast, catching NE swells that wrap down from the northeast monsoon window. It fires best on NE wind swells from October through March, mid to high tide, in the 3-5ft range. The sandbars shift but generally produce fun, powerless peaks along a long stretch of beach with normal-length rides of 50-150m. All skill levels can manage this wave, and weekday crowds are essentially non-existent, with only a handful of surfers appearing on weekends. Bottom: sand-bar. Season: October to March. Consistency: reliable during northeast monsoon. The wave shares the beach with windsurfers, so stay aware of crossing traffic in the lineup, especially on gusty days when the wind picks up before the surf does.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays this stretch of beach is essentially empty. A small local crew shows up on weekends but the beach is long enough to spread out and find your own peak. No notable localism reported. Windsurfers share the zone, so give them room and be aware of their lines.

Access & Facilities

Exit highway 3 at Chunan and follow the coast road south roughly 2km to Long-Fong Harbor. The surf zone sits on the harbor's south side. Parking is straightforward. Fresh seafood stalls operate around the harbor from 10am to 6pm, making this an easy day-trip with food sorted. No dedicated surf rentals reported on-site.

Nearby Alternatives

If the sandbars are blown out or flat, the broader Miaoli coastline holds a handful of beach breaks that respond to the same NE monsoon swell window. Spots further north toward Hsinchu catch more direct NE exposure and can offer more size on the same swell.
