A boat-access right reef sitting roughly 500m offshore near Utumalama Point, Special K is one of the more rewarding rights in Samoa when the conditions align. SE to SW swell wraps around the submerged reef, producing a walled-up right with a distinct bowly end section that throws hard and can deliver a proper pit. NW winds are offshore, mid to high tide is the sweet spot, and the wave holds from around 3ft up to 8ft before it gets unmanageable. Intermediate to advanced surfers will get the most out of it. On a small day the ride is short, but a solid SE groundswell can string together 50 to 150m of usable wall. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: medium. Bring a step-up for anything pushing 6ft plus, and do not miss the end section.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup is typically empty to lightly attended. The boat-access requirement and offshore location naturally filter the crowd. On weekends it can see a few visiting surfers from nearby camps, but serious pressure is rare. Respect the guides and resort guests who frequent the pass, and yield to anyone who organized a boat specifically for this spot.

Access & Facilities

Boat access only. Expect roughly 300m west of Pebbles, right at the reef pass used to return to shore. No parking, no facilities at the break. Staying at a local surf resort with boat transfers is the practical option. There is a channel nearby that makes access manageable, though a paddle from land would be genuinely demanding. Watch the reef pass current when the swell is up.

Nearby Alternatives

Pebbles sits across the channel and offers a harder, hollower option for goofy-footers when Special K is not performing. If the SE trades are killing the onshore conditions here, check Coconuts further along the coast, which is more fully exposed and can rival the best waves on the island on its day.
