A hollow A-frame reef break on Savai'i's south coast, Aganoa fires in front of a family-run surf camp and delivers two very different waves off the same peak. SE to SW swell between 3-10ft is the window, with northerly winds keeping both faces clean. The left is the standout: fast, backdoor-hollow, and unforgiving, breaking straight onto the reef with no defined channel and fingers of coral throughout. Strong SE trades will mess up both waves. E winds run cross-shore and are manageable. Capable intermediates can handle the right at mid to high tide, but size pushes both waves into advanced-only territory. Surf camp crowds stay low and mellow, with daily boat and car trips to nearby options keeping the lineup from stacking up. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April to October. Consistency: high. At low tide on the left, one mistimed wipeout puts you on shallow coral, so wear booties and know your exit before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup pressure is low. The surf camp model means guests rotate through multiple south coast spots daily, so the peak rarely stacks. Access requires either staying at the fales or paying a small community fee that supports local school fees. Respect that arrangement. Mellow vibe overall, but don't mistake low crowds for low consequences.

Access & Facilities

Follow the Aganoa sign off the south coast highway and take the dirt road to its end. No public parking area or standalone facilities. Amenities are camp-based: accommodation, meals, and guided boat trips are available through the surf camp. The lagoon has an inside left for less experienced surfers. No water quality concerns reported.

Nearby Alternatives

When Aganoa closes out in heavy SE trades, Coconut Grove comes into its own, sitting offshore in those same winds. Middles peak and K-Land lefts are both within an hour's drive. Salailua offers a deep channel and more manageable walls breaking both ways when you need something less committing.
