A long drive through Uafato Conservation Area deposits you at a genuinely uncrowded bay on Upolu's north coast, where a cobblestone rivermouth and three supporting acts give intermediates a solid session without the coral anxiety of Samoa's famous south coast. The rivermouth peaks both ways with walled-up faces and cover-up sections at mid tide, best on NE swell with SW winds cleaning things up. Size range runs knee-high to double overhead, and the spot handles that upper end respectably. Crowds are essentially zero, locals are welcoming, and the only real hazard is bouncing off the reef on a wipeout. Bottom: reef and rivermouth cobble. Season: November through February. Consistency: medium. Bring a standard shortboard and time your arrival to coincide with an incoming mid tide for the most defined peaks and the best chance at a cover-up section before the rivermouth flattens things out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The drive through Uafato Conservation Area filters out casual visitors, meaning you will almost always have the lineup to yourself or near enough. Local vibe is welcoming. Give respect in the water regardless, and leave the conservation area as you found it.

Access & Facilities

Drive to the beach via the conservation area road, a slow but manageable journey. A carpark is available at the bay. No facilities on site, so carry water, food, and any supplies you need. The river outflow creates some estuary pollution, which is worth factoring in if you have cuts or open skin.

Nearby Alternatives

When Tiavea is flat or the tide is wrong, the north coast near Apia offers fringing reef breaks that pick up more swell exposure. The famous south coast setups at Salani and surrounds are worth the cross-island drive when a strong SE swell is running.
