A reliable south-facing beachbreak on São Miguel's southern coast, Agua de Alto is the sensible backup when Populo gets too busy. It shares Populo's generous swell window, catching everything from NE through to W, but trades a little shape and size for breathing room and consistent peaks spread across the beach. Northerly winds blow offshore here, and it works at all tides, which gives it an unusually long daily window. The 2-8ft size range is honest: below 2ft it flatlines, but it picks up swell efficiently enough that flat days are uncommon. This is a beginner-friendly lineup with multiple peaks and space to spread out, rarely drawing the crowds that pin down Populo on a good day. Bottom: beachbreak. Season: year-round, autumn and winter most consistent. Consistency: high. Bring a forgiving board and don't overlook it on weekdays when the beach is quiet and the peaks are all yours.

When Agua de Alto is too small or the northerly wind isn't cooperating, Populo to the west handles similar swell with better shape and is worth the short drive. For something completely different, the north coast spots open up when south-facing beaches go flat.
