A powerful right-hand point peeling off the northern headland of Praia dos Mosteiros, on São Miguel's rugged north coast, this wave delivers long performance walls with genuine punch in the pocket. It works on SW through N swell, meaning it lights up regularly through autumn and winter when Atlantic groundswell marches in. Offshore winds blow from the east, and the wave runs across all tides, though high tide smooths out the wall and gives the cleanest entry. The take-off is accessible for intermediates, but the shallow, rocky bottom and size range up to 12ft demands respect and keeps pure beginners on the beach. Bottom: point over rock, shallow sections. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: high. Bring a board with volume and drive for the bigger days, and check it on a mid-morning push when the offshore is freshest and the swell has organised overnight.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Rarely crowded by any Azores standard, which says something. The north coast location and sometimes punishing conditions filter the lineup naturally. Basic respect goes a long way here. Dawn patrol in autumn and winter gives the most uncrowded sessions with the best offshore window.

Access & Facilities

A car park sits at the beach, making access straightforward. Camping is available nearby, making it viable as a base for north coast exploration. No significant pollution or hazard concerns beyond the shallow rocky bottom at lower tides. Booties are worth considering if the reef is exposed.

Nearby Alternatives

When Mosteiros is too big or the swell direction is off, Santa Barbara and Monte Verde on the south coast offer fast beachbreak peaks with a more forgiving bottom. Populo near Ponta Delgada is a consistent city beachbreak option when south swells fill in.
