A-frame · BeachBeginner → Advanced3–8 ftJan – Dec

A long, cliff-backed beach south of Costa da Caparica that absorbs big NW and W swells more gently than its northern neighbor, making it a smart escape when size overwhelms the main strip. Optimal conditions are NE or E winds with NW, W, or SW swell in the waist-to-head-high range, working best between low and high tide since dead low can close out and dead high tends to shore-dump. The spread-out peaks suit all abilities and the vibe is relaxed, though weekends draw real crowds. Bottom: sand. Season: Dec-Feb peak, workable year-round on any Atlantic swell. Consistency: moderate, sand banks shift and can be fickle. Rips develop as size increases, so read the beach before paddling out, and note that water quality can drop after heavy rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are manageable. Weekends, especially in summer, pack out. The local crew is welcoming as long as you show respect in the lineup. With a large beach and numerous peaks, spreading out is easy and sharing waves comes naturally. Dawn patrol on weekend mornings is the obvious move if you want breathing room.

Access & Facilities

Drive the A2 south from Lisboa, turn toward Costa da Caparica, then follow the coast road south roughly 10km to Fonte da Telha. Parking is available along the beachside road. Local surf schools offer board rentals and lessons. Water quality is fair but can be polluted after significant rainfall.

Nearby Alternatives

Costa da Caparica to the north is the go-to when swell is small and banks are lining up. On days when Fonte da Telha closes out, the northern end of the Caparica beach system often holds better shape.
