A powerful Atlantic beach-break on the Cap-Ferret peninsula, Le Truc Vert sits about an hour southwest of Bordeaux where shifting sandbars produce hollow, punchy peaks. SW to NW swell at 5-8ft is the sweet spot, with low to mid tide hollowing out the faces and producing the sharpest right-handers off the main bar. Morning offshore winds are the norm here, giving clean conditions before the sea breeze fills in. Intermediate surfers get the most out of it, the wave has genuine power and a notorious lateral current that drags hard from right to left, making the paddle-out a workout on bigger days. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and winter. Consistency: moderate, needs solid Atlantic groundswell to fire. Arrive early and position yourself left of the pull to avoid getting swept out of the peak before your first set.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays stay quiet most of the year. Summer changes the dynamic: the beach fills and the lineup gets competitive, with locals noticeably less welcoming. Outside July and August the vibe is relaxed. Standard respect applies: take what comes to you, no drop-ins, and acknowledge the regulars.

Access & Facilities

From Bordeaux follow signs to Cap-Ferret. Past Lège-Cap-Ferret, take the right-hand road along the oceanfront to Le Truc Vert campsite, which has a large car park. Basic facilities via the campsite. No reef, but the current is the main hazard, rips can be powerful on bigger swells, so know your exit before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

The Cap-Ferret coastline has multiple beach-break peaks spread along the same stretch of sand, so walking the beach north or south can turn up a bar without the crowd. On smaller, cleaner days the interior Bassin d'Arcachon side offers flat-water alternatives for beginners.
