A long right-hand point on the Basque coast of southwest France, Lafitenia reels up to 250 yards across a sand-covered rock reef in a sheltered bay outside St Jean-de-Luz. Optimal conditions are NW or W swell at 3-12ft, low to mid tide, with SE or S wind keeping the face clean. The headland blocks NE winds, making it more forgiving than most nearby spots. Intermediates can work the mid-section walls, advanced surfers will target the steep, unpredictable drop on bigger NW sets. Bottom: rock and sand. Season: October to February, though rideable year-round. Consistency: low to moderate outside autumn and winter. Bring a versatile board and expect a long paddle back up the point when it's firing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lafitenia is always busy. Quiksilver's European HQ sits directly in front of the break, which tells you everything about its profile. Summer crowds are relentless, driven by small, fun swells and easy parking above the bay. The local crew is large but the vibe is largely tolerant. Dawn patrol in autumn gives you the best shot at uncrowded sets with quality swell.

Access & Facilities

Follow signs for Acotz camping above Lafitenia Bay. A car park sits just above the break. Acotz campground on the hill provides basic facilities. Water quality is moderate, rated as residential-affected rather than heavily polluted. No significant hazards beyond a long paddle on pumping days and the usual rock reef caution at low tide.

Nearby Alternatives

If Lafitenia is maxed out or mobbed, Cenitz to the south offers a similar right-hand point setup with a more defined shape on the right swell. Guéthary's Les Alcyons handles bigger swells well and provides quality lefts for advanced surfers when northwest energy is running.
