A lighthouse-backed beachbreak on the mid-Landes coast, Contis-Plage delivers consistent peaks across a wide sandbank system that rewards beginners and keeps intermediates honest on the better days. W to NW swells at 2-6ft with an easterly offshore are the sweet spot. The rivermouth and a bunker to the north mark the best sandbank sectors, visible from the lighthouse above. Crowds build hard through July and August, but outside peak summer the lineup is spacious and the vibe is relaxed, with local surfers known for being welcoming to visitors learning the craft. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, best Jul-Sep for crowds and consistency. Consistency: high. Waves above 5ft tend to close out across the beach, so manage expectations on larger swells and paddle toward the rivermouth end where banks hold shape longest. Pollution from estuary runoff can cloud the water after rain, check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

July and August bring ultra-crowded conditions typical of the Landes coast, with multiple surf schools operating out of town. Outside summer the beach is quiet. Localism is minimal and the vibe is consistently described as friendly and open. Dawn patrol in July sidesteps most of the pressure.

Access & Facilities

One road leads to Contis-Plage from Saint-Julien-en-Born. There is a carpark, camping nearby, and full beach-town facilities in summer including surf schools. The lighthouse above the beach is a useful vantage point for reading the banks before paddling out. River runoff from the hinterland marshes can bring murky water that drifts south along the beach, after heavy rain, skip it.

Nearby Alternatives

The mid-Landes coast has dozens of peaks within a 45-minute drive. Hossegor to the south steps up the power and performance significantly if you need more punch. Mimizan-Plage to the north offers similar beachbreak character with a jetty that helps shape the banks into more defined sections.
