A powerful slab lurking on the west-facing flank of the Cotentin Peninsula, Surtainville needs at least 3ft of swell before it shows any real intent. SW to NW groundswells feed it directly off the Atlantic, and the large tidal range here is critical: low tide kills the wave dead, while incoming to high produces the heaviest, most defined sections. Offshore winds blow from the east and northeast, common enough on this stretch of the Normandy coast to give you regular clean windows. This is an advanced-only proposition, not because of sheer size but because the slab character leaves no margin for hesitation when a set swings through. The Surtain Surf House and School operates on the beach, but this wave is not for their students. Bottom: reef/slab. Season: autumn and winter for consistent groundswell. Consistency: moderate. Show up on a rising tide with 4-6ft forecast and an easterly wind and you will have it nearly to yourself.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Surtainville draws a small, knowledgeable local crew who know exactly when the tide slot is right. Crowds are generally light by any standard, and if you respect the lineup and read the conditions properly, there is no reported localism pressure. Arriving humble and well-prepared goes further than anywhere.

Access & Facilities

The beach is directly accessible from the village of Surtainville on the Cotentin Peninsula's west coast. Surtain Surf House and School is on site for parking reference, supplies, and local knowledge. Water temperatures drop sharply in autumn and winter, demanding a minimum 4/3 wetsuit with booties. Bring your own water and snacks as village amenities are limited out of season.

Nearby Alternatives

When Surtainville is too small or the tide is wrong, the broader Cotentin coast offers beach breaks to the north and south that handle similar swell windows. The Rozel area to the northeast picks up more N swell and can offer a different option when conditions shift.
