SW to NW groundswells feed it directly off the Atlantic, and the large tidal range here is critical: low tide kills the wave dead, while incoming to high produces the heaviest, most defined sections. Offshore winds blow from the east and northeast, common enough on this stretch of the Normandy coast to give you regular clean windows. This is an advanced-only proposition, not because of sheer size but because the slab character leaves no margin for hesitation when a set swings through. Surtain Surf House and School is on site for parking reference, supplies, and local knowledge. Water temperatures drop sharply in autumn and winter, demanding a minimum 4/3 wetsuit with booties. Bring your own water and snacks as village amenities are limited out of season.
When Surtainville is too small or the tide is wrong, the broader Cotentin coast offers beach breaks to the north and south that handle similar swell windows. The Rozel area to the northeast picks up more N swell and can offer a different option when conditions shift.
