A low-key beach break on the Paraná coast of southern Brazil, Praia Grande picks up a wide swell window and handles everything from knee-high fun to overhead-plus surf when a solid south or southeast swell pushes through. Offshore winds from the north and northwest clean up the peaks, and mid tide tends to produce the most defined walls. The left side of the beach consistently throws up the better-shaped peaks, so that's where most surfers position themselves on arrival. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and winter swells (April through August) tend to deliver the most punch, though the break can function year-round on smaller energy. Consistency: moderate. Water temperatures in southern Paraná run cooler than the tropical north, so bring at least a 2mm or 3/2 suit for cooler months. At 50 to 300 meters of rideable length on a good day, there's room to spread out without feeling like you're fighting for scraps.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday and weekend crowds are consistently light, which is a genuine draw for this stretch of coast. The vibe is relaxed. Positioning on the left side of the beach keeps you near the better peaks without any territorial pressure. Standard lineup etiquette applies.

Access & Facilities

Roadside parking is available directly in front of the beach with no special access required. The surrounding area is a functional small-town beach zone rather than a tourist hub, so pack your own supplies. Urchins and occasional rips are the main hazards to watch.

Nearby Alternatives

The Paraná coast has several other beach breaks within reach if Praia Grande is flat or blown out. Exploring a few kilometers in either direction often reveals peaks with different swell exposures on a poor day here.
