One of South Florida's more capable surf spots, Hobe Sound Public Beach works a mixed reef-and-sand bottom that produces long, fast walls when conditions align. NE swell is the ticket, with incoming tide and light WNW winds keeping the faces clean. Best size runs head to overhead, though bigger swells push the outside reef break more than a quarter-mile offshore, demanding serious fitness and strong paddle power. Intermediate to advanced surfers will get the most out of it. Smaller days wedge over a shallower reef section and stay playful, while the larger lineups attract a light, experienced crowd spread across multiple peaks. Bottom: mixed reef and sand. Season: fall through spring, with hurricane swells adding bonus windows. Consistency: moderate, heavily wind-dependent. Currents run strong to the south on bigger days, so position yourself carefully and factor in a long paddle back up the beach after each wave.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe here is welcoming and the crowd stays light. Surfers tend to cluster near the lifeguard tower as a reference point, but peaks run the length of the beach. Spreading out is easy and expected. No notable localism pressure.

Access & Facilities

The beach is easy to reach with a public access point, though parking is limited and fills quickly on good days. Arrive early. Lifeguard tower provides a useful lineup marker. Clean ocean water. No major facilities beyond parking.

Nearby Alternatives

When Hobe Sound is blown out or too small, the broader Treasure Coast has options north toward Sebastian Inlet, one of Florida's most consistent reef breaks, or south toward Jupiter, which picks up similar NE swell with slightly more shelter from cross-winds.
