A punchy black-sand beachbreak on the Krui coast of South Sumatra, Mandiri dishes out heavy, shifting barrels that can genuinely surprise even experienced surfers. S to W swells in the 2-6ft range are the sweet spot, best attacked on small, windless mornings before the onshores build. NE winds keep faces clean. A-frame peaks break across all tides, though the powerful rips and currents that shape those barrels also make the paddle-out a serious workout, particularly as size increases beyond 6ft. The wave doesn't hold size or wind well, so timing is everything. This suits confident intermediates and above: even skilled surfers can take a beating pushing back through the shifting peaks. Bottom: beach (black sand). Season: Feb-Apr, Oct-Dec. Consistency: high. Leafy's surf shop sits right at the beach entrance, but soft-top rentals are only sensible on the smallest days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds gather near the archway entrance to the beach road, so the peak zone can get competitive. Paddling back out through shifting peaks filters the lineup naturally. Respectful surf etiquette applies, this isn't a mellow scene when it's on.

Access & Facilities

Free parking at the beach road entrance off Pantai Tanjung Setia. Leafy's surf shop is on-site for boards and gear. River and estuary outflow can push muddy water, trash, and worse into the lineup after rain. Move north up the beach for cleaner conditions.

Nearby Alternatives

When Mandiri is blown out or too big, the reef breaks around Ujung Bocur and Krui Left and Right offer more protected options a short drive away. Jenny's, further north, is a mellow right-hander suited to smaller swells and lighter winds.
