Pantai Panjang stretches seven kilometres of sandy beach along Sumatra's SW coast, delivering a mellow, consistent beach break that catches swell most of the year. SW groundswell is the primary driver, and the wide beach produces both lefts and rights depending on sandbar position. Offshore winds from the NE clean things up nicely, and the wave works best from waist-high to a couple of feet overhead, though Bengkulu's open exposure means it occasionally swings into double-overhead territory. Crowds are light to nonexistent, making it genuinely accessible for beginners and intermediates logging time in the water. Bottom: sand. Season: consistent year-round, SW swell peak Apr-Sep. Consistency: moderate to good. Strong rip currents run along this stretch, so read the beach carefully before paddling out, and never go alone on bigger days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Bengkulu rarely draws visiting surfers in numbers, so the lineup stays quiet. Local presence is low-key and relaxed. Weekends can bring curious onlookers to the beach, but the lineup itself stays uncrowded. No significant localism to report.

Access & Facilities

Pantai Panjang is easy to reach from Bengkulu city, a few kilometres south of the centre with roadside access along much of its length. Basic warungs and accommodation sit close to the sand. No dedicated surf hire shops, so bring your own equipment. The strong currents are the main hazard here, not the wave itself.

Nearby Alternatives

Bengkulu city and its surrounding coastline hold a handful of exposed and sheltered beach breaks that pick up different swell angles, worth scouting when the main beach is blown out or flat. Sumatra's SW coast has more consistent reef and point options further afield for surfers ready to explore.
