Reef peaks along Dakar's Corniche Ouest cliff road break with surprisingly consistent shape, picking up SW through N swells across a submerged reef platform near Soumbedioune. Optimal conditions are mid tide only, 3-12ft, with NE offshore winds cleaning up the faces. The wave suits intermediate to advanced surfers who can read reef setups and don't mind sharing a lineup with the occasional jellyfish or worse. Despite solid consistency, almost nobody surfs here due to heavy pollution from Dakar's commercial port and urban runoff, with circulating rumors of disease risk and sharks. Bottom: reef. Season: Oct-Mar. Consistency: high. Know what you're getting into before paddling out here, because the water quality is a genuine health concern, not just surf gossip.
The lineup is almost always empty, but not for good reasons. Pollution is the crowd deterrent here. The few surfers who do paddle out tend to be local Dakar regulars who know the water and the reef. Respect their call on whether conditions are acceptable on any given day.
The Corniche Ouest road runs directly above the break, making it easy to observe conditions from your car before committing. No parking facilities and no amenities at the water. Come fully self-sufficient with water, food, and a first-aid kit. Given the commercial pollution rating, consider your exposure time carefully and shower thoroughly after.
When pollution makes Corniche Ouest a non-starter, Ouakam just south of Les Mamelles lighthouse offers reef surf in cleaner conditions. Ngor Left and Ngor Right are also within range on the peninsula's tip, with Ngor Left offering long walled-up rides on NW swell at lower tides.
