A raw, exposed reefbreak on the far western edge of the atoll, Kottey sits in front of a garbage dump beside a muddy lagoon, which tells you everything about its vibe. SW monsoon swell from S to NW wraps onto a mainly dead coral reef and wedges hard, generating heavy, punchy walls that can push 8ft and beyond. The conditions are rippy, the channel nonexistent, and the paddle-out is genuinely hazardous. This is a wave for confident, experienced surfers only, ideally the kind who can read a gnarly lineup without a safe exit. Bottom: dead reef. Season: SW monsoon (May to October). Consistency: high when swell is running. Pack a big enough board to handle the size and power, know your rip escape plan before you paddle, and accept that the setting is functional at best. To the north, Demon Point offers a cleaner environment with small, perfect peaks for two or three surfers when the swell drops.
The setting around a dump and murky lagoon keeps the vibe sparse. Crowds are rarely an issue here. Expect solo or near-solo sessions, but do not mistake emptiness for safety. The difficulty is the wave and the water, not competition in the lineup.
No parking, no facilities, no services. Bring everything you need including water, first aid, and a plan. The pollution flag is real given the adjacent garbage dump. Water quality should be treated with caution. Access is by road within the atoll.
When Kottey is maxed out or the current is unworkable, Demon Point to the north offers compact, clean peaks ideal for two to three surfers. Gaukendi Bridge also has a surfable left on the south side for smaller days.
