A geographically ideal cobblestone right-point on El Salvador's La Libertad coast, Punta Roca delivers steep walls and multiple barrel sections across nearly a half-mile of ride when the swell is up. SSW and SW swells from 3ft to double-overhead-plus are the target window, with light northerly offshores essential to keep it clean. All tides work, though low tide exposes the boulders and makes every section shallower and more consequential. Intermediate to advanced surfers can find their level somewhere along the point, from grinding tubes near the top to more forgiving walls at the La Paz inside section, but the lineup is heavy and localism is real. Bottom: cobblestone and boulders. Season: April through October. Consistency: high. Arrive at dawn to get waves before the crowd stacks up, and never leave valuables near the cemetery end of the point.
Crowd rated at the heavy end of the scale and localism as intimidating. Drop-ins and hassling are a documented reality. Respect the pecking order, sit wide if you're unfamiliar with the lineup, and earn your waves down the point before moving toward the top sections. Dawn patrol midweek is your best chance at space.
Park near the hotels and restaurants at La Paz and paddle or walk up the point. The cemetery end is notorious for theft so avoid leaving gear there. Water quality is fair and deteriorates after heavy rain due to river and estuary input. Basic facilities and camping are available nearby.
Sunzal, a few kilometres up the coast, picks up the same SSW to SW swell and works best at lower tides, offering a more forgiving ride when Punta Roca is maxed out or too crowded. El Zonte further west is another right-point and rivermouth setup worth checking. The Rio Grande bocana can shape long hollow lefts when conditions align.
