A mile-long stretch of sand-and-rock peaks just west of La Libertad, Conchalio trades perfection for accessibility and delivers speedy, thumping barrels when conditions align. It picks up SSW and SW swells out of the South Pacific readily, which means it catches plenty of energy but also gets destroyed by onshore winds that clock in reliably around noon from spring through autumn. The dry season window, late autumn through winter, is when offshore northerlies open up the barrels and give surfers clean exits. Ability range runs beginner to advanced, though the wave suits higher-skill surfers best when it is firing. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: November through April. Consistency: moderate but fickle in onshore conditions. Arrive at dawn to beat both the wind and the growing crowd before the heat kicks in.
Expect a moderate crowd when it is good. Surfing has been woven into coastal Salvadoran life since traveling surfers introduced the sport to nearby Sunzal and Punta Roca in the 1970s, so there are genuinely talented locals in the water. The vibe is welcoming but humility and respect are appreciated, especially when the swell is pumping.
Easy access right off the highway west of La Libertad. A few small hotels and hostels are nearby, and the limited tourism infrastructure keeps the cultural experience intact. Water quality is generally clean but can deteriorate after heavy rain during the wet season.
When Conchalio is blown out or closing out, La Libertad's Punta Roca is nearby and offers a more sheltered, right-hand point that handles size and offshore winds better. Sunzal, a few kilometers west, is another option with a more forgiving point setup suited to intermediate surfers.
