A right-hand boulder point that stays alive when El Salvador's more famous breaks go flat, Mizata sits at km 86 on the Litoral Highway and quietly delivers surf around 330 days a year. The Point works best on a SSW swell at low to mid tide, with light N winds grooming the face into fast, punchy drops and workable walls. Chest-high to well-overhead is the sweet spot, above 8-10ft strong currents and a nearby cliff make the Point almost unrideable. A punchy left also breaks off the peak, and three additional breaks along the half-mile of black sand, Tweeners, the Beachbreak, and The Slab, mean multiple options across the tidal range. Intermediates can find their feet here while advanced surfers chase the hollow sections and the occasional barrel. Crowds are rare compared to Punta Roca or Tunco, and the local vibe is genuinely welcoming. Bottom: boulder point with sand sections. Season: year-round, peak consistency in southern hemisphere fall and winter. Consistency: high. Note that the estuary can push river runoff into the lineup after heavy rain, so check water quality before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Mizata is consistently described as one of the least crowded quality waves in El Salvador. Even on weekends, the lineup sees few surfers. Locals are welcoming rather than territorial. Dawn patrol at the Point gives you first pick of sets before any afternoon sea breeze fills in.

Access & Facilities

Turn off the Litoral at km 86 onto a dirt road near the restaurant. Parking is available at Mizata Point Resort, which sits directly on the point and has a restaurant. Access the Point by crossing the river mouth or paddling out near the cliff. There are no public facilities on the beach itself. Water quality is clean in dry season but can deteriorate after significant rainfall due to the estuary outflow.

Nearby Alternatives

El Zonte, a point and rivermouth peak further east, offers predictable rights over boulders when Mizata is small or the swell angle is off. Sunzal picks up almost any S to SW swell and works at lower tides, making it a reliable backup if the long drive to Mizata isn't paying off.
