The inside section of Punta Roca's famous half-mile cobble-and-boulder righthand point, La Paz delivers a more forgiving ride than the main peak while still throwing the occasional keg when a solid SSW or SW swell is running. Best from chest-high to overhead-plus, it works on all tides though low tide exposes shallow cobbles that demand respect. Light north winds keep the face clean. Intermediate surfers will find it approachable without the intensity of the top of the point, and even advanced surfers use La Paz as the preferred paddle-out channel before working their way up the lineup by water. Moderate crowds are the norm, significantly calmer than Punta Roca proper. Bottom: cobble and boulder. Season: Southern Hemisphere fall and winter, roughly April through September. Consistency: solid when south swells are running. Park at the restaurant lots directly in front of the break and watch your footing on slippery rocks, especially at low tide.
Expect moderate crowds, but the vibe is noticeably more relaxed than at Punta Roca up the point. Localism is manageable. Respect the lineup order, don't snake, and you'll be fine. If the top of the point is maxed out and territorial, La Paz is the sensible alternative with far less friction.
Park in the lots at Rotherham's or adjacent restaurants right on the beach. The paddle-out is straightforward from the beach in front. Watch the cobbles and boulders stepping in and out, particularly at low tide when rocks are exposed and slippery. Water quality is fair and can deteriorate after heavy rain. Rotherham's and nearby spots have food and drink covered.
Punta Roca's main peak sits right up the point for experienced surfers wanting more critical, longer walls. When south swells go flat, the beach breaks around La Libertad can offer something to ride while waiting for the next pulse.
