Punta Roca delivers one of Central America's most consistent right-hand point breaks, firing off a rocky headland just outside the port town of La Libertad, roughly 20 minutes from San Salvador's international airport. SW and S swells wrap around the point to produce long, hollow lines from 3ft up to double-overhead and beyond, with a mid-tide window offering the cleanest shape across three distinct sections. The middle section is typically the pick, throwing up fast, powerful tubes that reward committed surfing. This is an experienced surfer's wave: the paddle-out is manageable through a channel, but the power and speed at size demand full commitment. Bottom: rock and reef. Season: May through October for the primary Southern Hemisphere swell window. Consistency: high for the region. Arrive at first light on weekdays to get waves to yourself before the weekend crowds and visiting surfers stack up in the lineup.
Weekdays see a thin lineup by regional standards. Weekends draw La Libertad locals, expats, and visiting surfers from San Salvador, and the peak can get competitive fast. Local surfers deserve respect in the lineup. Priority etiquette applies strictly at the main peak. Dawn sessions on weekdays are the most sensible call.
Direct access from San Salvador by taxi or rental car makes this one of the most accessible waves in the Americas. The Punta Roca restaurant at the point is the community hub: good food, cold beer, and reliable local knowledge from staff and regulars. Secure your gear and do not walk around La Libertad town at night or flash valuables. The town has real safety concerns. Stick to the restaurant and hotel corridor after dark.
Several beach breaks and lesser points flank La Libertad along the coast for smaller or different-angle swells. When Punta Roca is maxed out or blown out, a short drive along the coast in either direction will usually turn up something rideable.
