La Bocana is the only genuine left-hander in the La Libertad area, breaking off a cobblestone river mouth on the south end of El Tunco village. It handles SSW to SW swells from chest-high to well overhead, with light northerly winds keeping faces clean. The spot works all tides, though the shallow cobble shelf bites hardest at low water, especially on the right. Intermediate to experienced surfers will find it rewarding, but the lineup has tightened up considerably over the years and can turn intense when the swell hits. Bottom: rocks and sand. Season: April through October for southern hemisphere swells. Consistency: high, this is a swell magnet that almost always has something running. The river mouth shifts sand and cobbles after heavy rain, subtly reshaping the peaks, but the main left stays true: steep entry, punchy mid-sections, and a dredging inside barrel that demands commitment and a board you can drive hard through quick transitions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see a moderate crew, weekends fill up fast. La Bocana has developed a genuine local contingent and the vibe can turn sharp when the swell is pumping. Respect the priority, don't snake, and earn your waves before trying to insert yourself on the best sets. Dawn patrol mid-week is your best window for space.

Access & Facilities

El Tunco is about 30 minutes from La Libertad by bus for less than a dollar. El Sunzal is a short walk east. La Bocana sits roughly 300m west toward El Tunco, on the far side of the river mouth. Food, water, and board rentals are available in El Tunco. Water quality varies and drops after heavy rainfall due to river runoff, so skip post-storm sessions if you're cautious.

Nearby Alternatives

If La Bocana is maxed out or too localized, El Sunzal next door offers a longer, more forgiving right-hand point that handles the same swell window. El Zonte, a short drive down the coast, provides a mellower option on smaller swells.
