Locals appreciate traveling surfers who show respect in the rotation. Fishermen work the pier throughout the day and their lines drift into the lineup, so paddle around carefully and stay alert.
Park at one of the restaurants up the beach toward La Paz for easy access. The break sits directly beside an active fishing pier where fish are cleaned and smoked daily, so diesel exhaust and strong fish odor are part of the experience. A sewage pipe nearby makes water quality a real concern, particularly after rain. Reef shoes are not necessary but avoid ingesting water.
Punta Roca, the right-hand pointbreak immediately adjacent, is the headline act in La Libertad when conditions align. When the whole coast is flat, neither spot will save you, but El Muelle tends to pick up stray swell marginally better than the more sheltered alternatives further east along the coast.
